The crash of Air India Flight AI 171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, took place on June 12, 2025, just after it took off from Ahmedabad on its way to London Gatwick. The plane hit a residential area near the B.J. Medical College hostel, which destroyed a lot of property and caused several casualties. The unfortunate deaths of 241 people, including those on the plane, plus an additional 28 people on the ground, took place, while nearly 60 were injured.

The accident sent tremors across the country. NDRF teams, along with local authorities, worked through the night. DNA test identification was used for many victims. The black box was retrieved from the wreckage on the hostel rooftop after 27 hours.

The sole survivor, British-Indian national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, was seated in 11A near the emergency exit. He managed to escape through the emergency door, surviving with injuries. His brother did not survive; he is currently undergoing treatment at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital.

Yesterday, PM Narendra Modi himself went to the crash site and then to the hospital to pay tributes to the dead and injured and to get assurance on their behalf. He had a high-level review with officials and met Ramesh.

Directorate-General Civil Aviation (DGCA), Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), United Kingdom AAIB, U.S. NTSB, and Boeing are the agencies involved in the investigation. DGCA may consider grounding the Boeing 787 fleet in India temporarily.

Families, meanwhile, will be compensated by the government with the sum of ₹1 crore each. Meanwhile, investigations continue to look through the black box, debris, and eyewitness reports in search of a reason behind the unhappy incident.
