The architectural landscape of Kashmir, particularly in the 1970s, was significantly influenced by the modernist and brutalist movements, as seen in structures like my grandfather’s house in Pampore. This transformation was largely due to the work of Joseph Allen Stein, an architect who brought Bauhaus-inspired designs to India. Despite the lack of formal training, local craftsmen, inspired by Stein’s projects, adopted these modernist principles, leaving a lasting impact on the region’s architectural heritage.
