Workers in Ratnapura, Sri Lanka were left astonished by the discovery they made while working in the backyard. During the process of digging well, the workers dug up 510 kilograms of the sapphire cluster. This sapphire cluster is 2.5 Million carats in value.
The name, Ratnapura itself stands for the land of the gems. "It is a special star sapphire specimen, probably the biggest in the world. Given the size and its value, we think it will interest private collectors or museums," an official of the National Gem and Jewellery Authority of Sri Lanka said, according to Ceylon Today.
The sapphire cluster is given the name "Serendipity Sapphire" for its humongous size. It is said to have an estimated value of more than $100 million. Still, the actual value of the gem will be disclosed after the cleaning and carving of the cluster. The sapphire is a type of star sapphire because it exhibits a star-like phenomenon known as asterism. The stone is pale blue in color, some sapphire clusters also have a deep blue color.
The complete location of the house was not revealed due to security reasons.
