Why This Launch Matters:

Tesla is entering India’s market for luxury EVs, competing against the current operators of the likes of BMWs and Mercedes, and not with the commercial ones.

Very high tariffs constitute a major hike in prices, almost making the Model Y twice as costly as it is in the U.S. The Long Range variant is fetching close to $70,000.

Next up are expansions into Delhi and Gurugram, with Q3 2025 slated for RWD deliveries and Q4 for Long Range.

In Brief:

The launch of the Model Y in Mumbai brings a classy luxury EV to India’s fast-growing market, but with a steep ex-showroom price, thanks to an import duty of 70%, and the absence of any local production as of now. With its 500–622 km range and quick acceleration, the Model Y aims at buying by the rich. Tesla is hunting seriously in Mumbai for the luxury segment and thus keeping an eye out for local manufacturing opportunities.
