Many people like to keep local and foreign brands of alcohol in their houses but many are unaware of the limit that is allowed.
According to a high court case of a man in Panchsheel Park, the house was raided by the excise department on keeping above the legal amount of alcohol without a bar license in the house.
FIR was filed against the individual under section 33 of the daily excise act for keeping 117.2 liters of alcohol in one 132 bottles of liquor. According to a case in 2020, 51.8 liters of whisky, rum, vodka, and gin were found in the house with 55.4 liters of wine.
With a family of six adults above the age of 25 living in the house, the Delhi High court reminded that under the rules 20 the limit for hard drinks like whisky, vodka, rum, and gin is 54 liters. The limit for drinks like beer, wine, and alcopop is 108 liters as per the rule.
“Flowing from Rule 20, as the joint household consists of six adults above 25 years of age, the permissible limit for possession of liquor at his house would be 54 liters of whisky, vodka, gin and rum and 108 liters of beer, wine, and alcopop. Therefore, prima facie there is no violation of the Delhi Excise Act, 2009 by the petitioner,” the court gave the verdict.
In case of violation of the limit, the convict would be fined Rs.50,000- Rs. 1,00,000 and three years of imprisonment.
