In the first week of May 2025, India launched "Operation Sindoor," whose sole intention was to conduct military operations against terrorist camps in Pakistan with incredible force. The operation was a reply to a brutal attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, in which 26 civilians lost their lives.
The operation lasted for exactly 23 minutes but was accomplished forcefully. Being armed with SCALP cruise missiles and AASM Hammer bombs, the IAF's Rafale jets struck nine targets, among them Bahawalpur and Muridke, from where groups like Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba function. BrahMos supersonic missiles and SkyStriker drones were also used for surgical strikes.
The killing of Abdul Rauf Azhar, a prominent leader of Jaish-e-Mohammed and a brother of Masood Azhar, was a big blow against terrorist organizations.
Pakistan responded to it by hiring drones and missiles striking Indian territory, including Jammu; however, the S-400 missile defense system of the Indian Army did not let their threats cause any harm.
The tension started mounting, and so did the world's concern. Intervention by President Trump in trying to broker peace. India has maintained that it was direct military communications that caused the ceasefire, but Pakistan credited the USA with bringing peace.
In any case, the ceasefire currently stays in place, offering some respite even though the situation remains volatile. Its continued smooth sailing spells mean that diplomatic efforts must continue.
