Pan card and Aadhar Card are two documents that are mandatory for all adult individuals to carry in form of identity proof. The card contains two unique identities of the cardholder that makes all the legal process, including documentation easy.
In case the cardholder passes away due to natural causes or in an untimely death, PAN and Aadhar cards had to be surrendered in the respective offices, to notify the offices of the situation and reason for discontinuation of the card.
The process of surrender is feasible in digital and online mode.
When & how to surrender PAN card?
The process of pan card surrender is partially online. the first half of the process is to be done in offline mode
Before the application of surrender, the legal heir of the cardholder had to fill all the payable due of the deceased person (if any).
The legal heir needs to submit a letter of application addressing the Income Tax Assessing officer of the concerned Jurisdiction. the letter should contain:-

Deceased person’s PAN number

Full name (as in PAN)

Date of Birth
-
Father’s name
The letter should have the reason stated clearly, and enclosed should be a copy of the death certificate and original pan card. A legal heir needs to visit the nearest Aaykar Sampark Kendra and submit the letter in person.
make sure to collect a photocopy of the acknowledgment of the letter. after which the department will check for any dues that have to be solved by the legal heir. In the case of no backlog, the ITR will deactivate the PAN card, but the record will exist in the department.

Step 2: Click on 'know your AO'
Step 3: submit your PAN number, and mobile number
Step 4: verify the OTP
This will show the details of your request as ‘PAN surrender request letter’ until processed.
How and When to surrender Aadhaar number of the deceased?
For the Aadhaar card, the process is almost immediate. When the death certificate is processed the Aadhar card is verified in the UIDAI database. Thus when the death certificate is issued, the individual is marked ‘deceased’. Soon after the Aadhaar number is passed to another person.
