Overnight charging: myths and facts, and the reason why it's bad

People usually have lots of questions about the proper use of batteries on their minds. How many times should you charge your phones? How to make sure you get a long lifespan out of them? These questions may arise in your mind. The answers to these questions may be a little confusing and can also provide you with incorrect information. This article is about whether we should keep our phones on charging overnight or not.

Why should you never leave your phone to charge overnight?

  • The batteries vary from device to device. So, depending on the device, you must charge them for a specific time the device can hold to avoid any overloading or ruining of a battery.

  •  Sometimes, your battery can get degraded because of the increasing time it spends with the charger, which means your battery's lifespan may get shortened.

  • It can lead to overheating the mobile battery, which can cause the mobile phone to be damaged.

  • It can lead to a trickle charge which means your phone charger doesn't stop charging after your phone reaches 100% capacity. It is disadvantageous because the trickle charge reduces the battery's capacity.

Important points

  1. It says that the overloading of the phone's battery can happen. Experts say that extra chips which are present in your smartphones make sure that it doesn't happen. Once the charging hits 100%, charging stops.

  2. You can use a wireless charger to slow down the charging, which will lead the battery to heat less.

  3. Keeping your battery level between 30% to 70% can prolong the battery life. Try to keep your phone charged but not fully charged.

  4. Try not to make your phone charge to 0% before charging.

  5. Try to keep your phone as cool as possible. Do not keep your phone outside in the sun.
