In response to a notable surge in Covid-19 cases in neighboring Kerala and the emergence of a new sub-variant, the Karnataka government has announced a series of precautionary measures. The health department is taking proactive steps to mitigate the potential spread of the virus in the state.
Mandatory Face Masks for High-Risk Groups: Dinesh Gundurao, the Health Minister of Karnataka, declared in Madikeri on Monday that wearing face masks is now compulsory for people above the age of 60, those with underlying health conditions, and individuals exhibiting symptoms such as fever, cold, and cough. This decision comes as part of the state's strategy to protect its most vulnerable citizens.
Monitoring of Sabarimala Pilgrims: Despite the surge in Kerala, there are currently no restrictions on movements or gatherings for Sabarimala pilgrims returning to Karnataka. However, the minister emphasized that monitoring efforts would continue, particularly in districts bordering Kerala, including Chamarajanagar, Kodagu, and Dakshina Kannada.
State's Covid-19 Statistics: Over the last three months, Karnataka has reported 58 active cases of Covid-19. Of these, 11 have led to hospitalizations, and there has been one death related to the virus. The deceased also suffered from other comorbidities.
Enhanced Health Infrastructure Preparedness: The state's health department has ordered an additional 3 lakh medical and PPE kits, along with an increased supply of rapid antigen tests. These are particularly intended for use in areas bordering Kerala and the state capital, Bengaluru. Furthermore, government hospitals across Karnataka are conducting mock drills to evaluate their readiness to handle any potential surge in cases. These drills assess various critical aspects like bed availability, staff readiness, oxygen supply, and availability of essential medicines.
Awaiting Further Guidelines: An official directive on the face mask mandate and other related guidelines is expected to be issued following a meeting with the state's technical advisory committee on Covid-19. This committee, headed by Dr. K Ravi of the Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, will offer additional recommendations for safeguarding public health.
No Movement Restrictions but Caution Advised: While there is no immediate concern warranting movement restrictions, the Health Minister urged the public to remain vigilant and adhere to the safety measures. The emphasis is on learning from past experiences and ensuring the state is well-prepared to face any challenges posed by the pandemic.
