Google has officially launched its Google Wallet app in India, offering users a secure way to store private information like loyalty cards, transit passes, and IDs. Importantly, this launch does not impact the existing Google Pay UPI app.

What is Google Wallet?

Google Wallet is a secure digital wallet designed for quick access to payment cards, passes, tickets, keys, and IDs. Unlike Google Pay, which focuses on managing finances, sending money, and earning rewards, Google Wallet is tailored for non-payment uses.

Using Google Wallet in India

The Google Wallet app will come pre-installed on all Pixel smartphones in India. Non-Pixel users can download it from the Play Store. However, the app is not available on wearables. Google has partnered with brands like PVR INOX, Flipkart, Air India, Shoppers Stop, and Ixigo to enhance the user experience.

History of Google Wallet

Originally launched in 2011, Google Wallet was merged with Android Pay in 2018 to create Google Pay. In 2022, Google rebranded its global Google Pay application as Google Wallet, while maintaining Google Pay for UPI payments in India.

Google Wallet offers a secure and efficient way to manage various digital items, complementing the functionality of Google Pay without replacing it. This launch adds a new dimension to digital storage solutions in India.
