PAN status: What the number on your PAN card signifies, read here

In today's world, it is very difficult to know who and how the other person exactly is. For the schools and colleges, the authorities need to know to whom they are giving the admissions. For the businesses and the organizations too, they need to know who their candidates are. Keeping in mind these factors, the government has made identification verification important for every organization.

Identification verification can be done through an Aadhar card, driver's license, voter ID card, or PAN card.

While most of us are familiar with what a PAN card is and how it is used, there are a few basic things that you should know about a PAN card.

PAN CARD NUMBER

A Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a ten-character long alphanumeric unique identifier. It is issued by the Income Tax Department. A PAN card serves as an important identification proof of an individual. It keeps track of a person's financial activities and is required for all forms of payments.

Every pan number is formed by using a structured format.

STRUCTURE OF A PAN NUMBER

  • The first five letters of the pan number are the letters (in uppercase).

  • These five letters are then followed by the four numbers.

  • The last character of the pan number is again an alphabet.

  • The first three characters of the number are the three letters which are forming a sequence of alphabetical letters from AAA to ZZZ.

  • The fourth character of the number identifies the type of holder of the card.

A- Association Of Persons(AOP), B- Body Of Individuals (BOI), U- Company, F- Firm, G- Government, H- Hindu Undivided Family (HUF), L- Local authority, J- Artificial juridical person,    P- Person (Individual), T - Trust (AOP)

  • The fifth character of the PAN is the first character of either the first name or the surname of the person in the case of the personal PAN card.

  • And in the case of a company, HUF, AOP, firm, trust, BOI, local authority, or artificial judiciary, the fifth character of the pan card number is written as the first character of mentioned entities.

  • The tenth character is an alphabetical digit that is used as a check-sum to verify the validity of that current code.
