Procedure and documents for court marriage, easier than you think

Under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, all individuals above the age of 18 years with consent can get married irrespective of their religion, caste, or nationality. Following is the procedure for court marriage.

 

Step 1) File the Notice of Intended Marriage at the Marriage Registrar’s office. It is compulsory for one of the two people to be residents in the city for at least 30 days. After this immediately you will get a date for marriage. 

Step2) The notice filled is then put up for objections.

Step3) If no objections are raised, then after 30 days, the marriage takes place. 

Step4) Both the candidates with 3 witnesses are required for marriage.

Step5) Both the parties sign the documents and the process is completed.

 

Documents required:

  • Application form

  • Fee receipt of application form

  • Date of birth proof

  • Resident proof

  • Present marital status of the bride

  • Present marital status of the groom

  • Document proving that the bride and groom are not related as per the special marriage act 

  • Passport photographs

  • Documents of divorce or death certificate of spouse (if necessary)
